The sun on the plateau

Crans-Montana, the sunniest resort in the Swiss Alps: a south-facing plateau at 1 500 m, above the Rhône valley. In autumn and winter the plateau often sits above the fog that covers the valley.

What to pack, season by season

Winter (December to March)
Dry cold and frequent sun on the plateau, much colder on the glacier. Layers, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream: at 2 700 m the sun burns even at −10 °C.
Spring (April to May)
Snow melts on the plateau and holds up high. Waterproof jacket, shoes that can take mud, sunglasses.
Summer (June to September)
Warm days, cool evenings, thunderstorms possible in the late afternoon. Start early in the mountains and carry a rain jacket and a warm layer.
Autumn (October to November)
Crisp light and first snow up high, often above the valley fog. A hat and a warm jacket for the morning; the sun warms things quickly.
