A team is two athletes of the same gender from the same nation.
Two runs: a speed run (downhill or super-G), then a slalom run. Each athlete skis only one.
The result is the sum of the two times.
The top 30 teams after the speed run start the slalom in reverse order.
Forced solidarity: if the first skier fails to finish or is disqualified, the teammate does not start.

Modern skiing is specialised: few athletes are still at the top in both speed and slalom. The team combined pairs the two. For spectators it is a race full of suspense: the morning ranking turns over during the afternoon slalom.
The combined is the oldest Olympic format: in 1936 it was the only alpine event at the Games. For decades the combined added up a downhill and a slalom skied by the same person. At the 2025 Worlds in Saalbach it was replaced by the team combined, which then joined the Olympic programme in 2026.
Saalbach. The first world title in the discipline's history goes to Americans Breezy Johnson and Mikaela Shiffrin. For the men, a Swiss sweep, with Franjo von Allmen and Loïc Meillard taking gold.
Bormio. The first Olympic team combined: gold for Franjo von Allmen and Tanguy Nef; two teams tie exactly for silver, so no bronze.
In 1987 it was the individual alpine combined, the ancestor of the discipline: a downhill and a slalom skied by the same person.

In the morning (10:00), the speed run: note the gaps, they set up the race.
In the afternoon (13:30), the slalom in reverse order: the leading teams start last. Watch the total-time column; the ranking changes with every finish.
The pairs often bring together two athletes who never race side by side the rest of the winter.
